History

Dead
and buried -
the visions, decisions
the fallen stones, the scattered bones
of anarchist and alchemist
and colonist; invaders
crusaders, conversions
incursions, dispersions
idolatries and prophecies
arches and columns and emblems and wisdoms
the hearts that glowed, the blood that flowed
the kings that reigned, the crimes that stained ...
They imprint on today.

Inchoate,
the poet
would penetrate, would meditate
on sources and courses -
of mastodon and Babylon
and Parthenon and Roman Forum
Silk-Road lore and Karakorum
Buddhist and nudist
ideals, cathedrals and castles and vessels
Manchurian, centurion, Gregorian, Victorian
pit-thrown babies, lords and ladies
pilgrimage and sacrilege and heritage ...
their impact on today.
