I Envy That Gatorade Cup
I envy that Gatorade cup
of water
replenishing
sustaining
refueling
a hard-work river of
perspiration
voyaging
from her brow,
unraveling sister streams
around and around
her neck
biceps
to the small of her back,
dying at
the tops
of her
blue and white New Balance
basketball shoes,
anchors of a 6'2 tanned frame,
black hair, sinful brown eyes
patiently longing
the next cup.

blonde hair pulled
tightly into
bun on top
of head
preached of excellence,
expectations of me
on the field
and off
and
her arkansas

ran over the side,
sweet southern
ignorance spilled
from her tongue
like a 400 pound man
attempting dive
into kiddie
pool --- "No gays on our team and we were damn proud of it"
