Girl Out of Order
She's six-years old when she wakes
up her kids, dancing with the cat,
singing, "You Are My Sunshine."
She's seventeen when she smokes
Virginia Slim Menthols in the backyard,
trying to write her thoughts in the sky.
She's twenty-one when she makes
love to her husband and thirty-three
when they fight about the bills.
She's only two when lost at the store,
wondering if she'll ever be found.
But at ninety-four, she's a woman
suffering quietly, in search for answers,
temporarily out of service to her feelings,
yet still the same — girl out of order.
