Green Stained Eden
Hungry barbarians are ragged oglers of pastry shop windows,
and these famished heathens could be black, white, brown, yellow, or red
but are always some shade of green.
When a loitering vandal is not invited to a party, he crashes it
Attila at the gates of Rome, Genghis at the Great Wall.
Under a green banner the mutinous homeless evict landlords
and then squat in the abandoned haunts.
But not all the outsiders are sword wielders.
Words, spoken or written, can be shaped into battering rams
Luther nailing his grievances onto the cathedral door,
Peter pontificating against Nero.
Jefferson in the course of human events.
No matter how saintly or satanic the cause,
the saint or Satan that leads it was once enthroned in a highchair
and banged his spoon when he was the last sibling to be fed.
The green additive of churned-up envy helps fuel the engines of any crusade.
Utopia is a world without A-lists where green is merely the color of grass.
But without A-lists the bouncers turn to the B’s,
and in green Eden insatiable Adam prowls for an ever more beautiful and
barbarous Eve.
