If Vesuvius Knew

For those who set their vineyards on the slopes of a volcano,
Trusting in repose of placid earth and limpid sky:
What if Vesuvius knew and only waited to be opportune?

The day after Vulcanalia, with everyone still drunk,
“We have been ambushed by the gods,” they could cry and blame the sky
Or fires in earth, or destiny: not themselves.
