In the Cold
Los Almos, NM 1945
When they opened the diner at five-thirty,
I’d already been waiting for an hour in the cold.
The neon illuminated right over my head waking me.
EAT the sign said and that is what I intended to do.
I’d achieved a sort of sleep along the endless highway
trudging through the desert night in quiet desperation.
Nagasaki. They did it despite all the debate
and now there will be no stopping it.
What started as a project too sweet to resist
has turned into something too deadly to kill.
