Morning Footprint

There’s a puddle of oil in the driveway
and as it dries in the morning sun,
it takes the form of something familiar.
The neighbors hammer away while the puddle sits.
A few blocks up are sounds of power tools,
distant dog barks. Recessed children.
The breeze on the trees.

Indian summer is ending.
Colder nights rob the crickets of life.
The puddle will dry soon and keep its
shape on the driveway.
Blacker than the black top.
A ring takes shape around the outer layer.
It’s almost tragic.
Sort of beautiful.

The footprint your car left last night.

Julie Ellinger Hunt resides in North West NJ with her two crazy kids and husband (she swears they are part alien). Her first book, Ever Changing, made an excellent beverage coaster. Julie's next collection, In New Jersey, due out this Winter, is rumored to be better than the first. Especially as a plate trivet. Keep up with her publications at jthunt.wordpress.com
