TV Mom
(for Cheryl Lynn)
Nobody cares about Donna Reed,
Mother.
Nobody wants their sheets ironed
or socks folded.
Nobody needs the crusts cut off their sandwich.
There are
other things.
Collecting tadpoles in a plastic bucket—
splashing in a ditch,
pants pulled up past my skinned knees.
That’s more important.
Smearing Noxzema
on bony, sun-burned shoulders,
first grade microbiology lessons
covering the kitchen table in Petri dishes—
You showed me that you loved me.
You don’t have to worry.
What I remember
are airport lunches,
feline bathing lessons,
snide remarks hidden
behind champagne flutes.
And brandy-scented kisses,
wedding dress expeditions.
and inheriting your pink cheeks,
bad aim,
generosity.
Nobody cares about Donna Reed,
Mother.
There are other things.
